WPC Canada is excited to host the 6th Annual Ignite Talks this fall!
Join us for a fast-paced and thought-provoking event featuring short 5-10 minute talks (similar to the TED format) from some of Calgary’s top game changers. You will hear ideas from speakers across Calgary‘s energy industry including start-up founders, academics and business leaders. You will also have the opportunity to network with other like-minded Calgarians and enjoy complimentary beverages and light snacks throughout the night.

The Transition Accelerator
Dan Wicklum has 25 years of experience managing research, driving innovation, and fostering collaboration in and among industry, government, academia and civil society. He was CEO of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance, was Executive Director of the Canadian Forest Innovation Council, and has been a senior manager at Environment and Climate Change Canada and Natural Resources Canada. His initial career was football, as a linebacker for the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Dr. Wicklum has a PhD from the University of Montana, an MSc. From the University of Calgary and a BSc. From the University of Guelph.
Councillor Jeff Davison
Councillor, Ward 6
City of Calgary
Councillor Jeff Davison was elected to serve the City of Calgary in October 2017. Representing Ward 6, his focus has been to bring back a “pro-business” vision to City Council. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors for Calgary Economic Development, and is the Council representative on the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund, a tool which is used to attract and support transformative investments in the city.
Jeff is the Chair of the Event Centre Assessment Committee. In July 2019, the Committee oversaw the ratification of a deal between the City, Calgary Stampede and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation for a brand new Event Centre in Victoria Park, which Councillor Davison believes will serve as the anchor for the new culture and entertainment district.
Prior to being elected, Councillor Davison had a successful career in communications and investor relations in the private sector. From 2000 to 2009 he held various exploration and communications roles at Canadian Natural Ltd., one of Canada’s largest oil and gas producers. From 2009 to 2012 he was Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Poynt Corp., where he focused on building brand and expanding the company’s international audience to over 25 million users in 10 countries. Since 2012, Councillor Davison has consulted for serval public and private energy and technology companies including Getty Images, where he managed global integrated marketing efforts for multiple brands and products.
While in office, Jeff has not forgotten his roots in the energy industry. In April 2019, Jeff accompanied the Mayor of Victoria, Lisa Helps, on a tour of Cenovus’s Foster Creek Oil Sands project, along with Canada Action and industry leaders to showcase the industry and directly combat negative perceptions. He continues to advocate in support of the energy industry.
Chris Slubicki

Chris Slubicki is President, CEO & Director of Modern Resources Inc., a Calgary-based private oil and gas company. He has more than 35 years of experience in the business sector.
From 2009 to 2011, Chris was Chief Executive Officer of OPTI Canada, where he was brought into a distressed situation, stabilized the company and sold it to CNOOC for $2.1 billion in late 2011. Chris is the former Vice-Chairman of Scotia Waterous and was one of the four original founders of Waterous and Co., a private global oil and gas mergers and acquisitions firm, starting the firm in Calgary in 1989. Prior to selling the firm to Bank of Nova Scotia in 2005, the firm expanded to offices in five countries with a staff of 88 and completed hundreds of oil and gas transactions over its 17-year tenure.
Chris graduated with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University and an MBA from the University of Calgary. He is a Professional Engineer in Alberta, and a member of APEGA. Chris is currently on the boards of Bonavista Energy Corporation and the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation. Chris served on the board of Alpine Canada Alpin for seven years, the last two as Chair. Chris coached young ski racers with the Fernie Alpine Ski Team for 14 years and served as President of the club for three years.
Todd Hirsch

Todd Hirsch is the Vice President and Chief Economist for ATB Financial. He holds degrees in economics from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. For over 20 years, he’s worked as an economist at numerous organizations including the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Bank of Canada.
He’s also the author of three books. His latest, “Spiders in Space: Successfully Adapting to Unwanted Change,” was released in 2017. Todd is a strong advocate in the arts and culture community. He is the board chair of the Calgary Arts Academy, and is on the boards of the Glenbow Museum and the Alberta Ballet
Jackie Forrest

ARC Energy Institute
Jackie actively monitors emerging strategic trends related to energy. She is an author and sought after public speaker with 20 years of experience in the energy industry. She is the host of the ARC Energy Ideas podcast, a weekly show that explains the latest trends and news in Canadian energy and beyond. She is a regular contributor to the Daily Oil Bulletin and the National Post publications and is a recognized expert in analyzing oil and gas systems in a carbon constrained world. She represents ARC Financial on the board of Longshore Resources Ltd, a privately held exploration and production company.
Prior to joining ARC, she was the leader of North American crude oil research for IHS CERA. Jackie has published 20 public papers on energy issues, covering a range of topics, including US oil supply sources, markets for Canadian crude oil, environmental regulation, technology and six papers on life cycle GHG emissions from crude oil.
Jackie was the recipient of the 2018 Schulich School of Engineering Environment and Sustainability Alumni Award, recognizing her contribution to a significant body of knowledge that has helped to increase the understanding of the connection between energy and environment. She is currently a member of the Schulich Industry Advisory Council (SIAC), the group provides input to the engineering school to help to ensure that programs and initiatives align with industry needs.
Jackie attended the University of Calgary where she received an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering. She also has an MBA from Queens University.

Carbon Upcycling Technologies (CUT) sells advanced solid products derived from greenhouse emissions and cheaply available solids. Since 2014, CUT has scaled its ability to capture CO2 emissions from point sources, such as power plants, by over a million times and has technically validated the performance of its end products in over 10 different industrial markets. Through its portfolio of CO2-derived solid nanoparticles, CUT has technically validated its solutions for use in the plastics, coatings, epoxy, adhesives, concrete, lithium-ion battery, and pharmaceutical industries. CUT commercialized a corrosion-resistant coating, utilizing its nanoparticles, in 2017, becoming the youngest CO2 utilization company to generate commercial revenue (<2.5 years since inception) and has since been confirmed as one of the top CO2 utilization companies in the world as one of the 10 Carbon X-Prize Finalists.
Fractal’s Enhanced JetShear technology reduces the diluent required to transport bitumen by over 50%, which increases export pipeline capacity by 20% and reduces GHGs by 11% on a well-to-tank basis. Fractal is advancing the development of the 50,000 bpd Enhanced JetShear Regional Hub project at Hardisty, Alberta in conjunction with producer and midstream partners.
Interface Fluidics is a Calgary-based, tech-enabled oilfield laboratory service company. Our proprietary nanotechnology platform helps customers optimize oil production, and visualize fluid interactions, through rapid chemical testing at reservoir temperature and pressure. Interface works with operators to increase oil recovery through optimizing EOR fluids and operating conditions. Interface has a broad range of expertise across offshore and onshore enhanced oil recovery schemes including ASP, polymer flooding, gas injection, and CO2 foam.
Melius Energy is a Calgary-based company that has an innovative solution to safely and efficiently transport Canadian bitumen as a safe, semi-solid product.
Using the BitCrude™ Technology, Melius Energy produces a proprietary form of bitumen, called True Crude™. True Crude™ is non-flammable and non-dangerous for transport, is non-toxic for marine life, and floats in both fresh and sea water within the containers.
